What expensive actually means
It is not more. It is fewer decisions, made consistently, with one thing allowed to be loud.
Expensive interfaces have fewer distinct values in them, not more. Three type sizes, not nine. Two weights. One accent. A spacing scale you could recite. The consistency is what registers as care, because inconsistency is what a rushed thing looks like and everyone recognises rushed without being able to name it.
They also have a clear loudest element per screen. Hierarchy is a ranking, and a ranking requires losers, if the heading, the price and the button are all bold, none of them is emphasised. Most amateur interfaces fail here rather than on colour or type choice.
The last quality is finish: the states nobody asks for. Hover, focus, active, disabled, loading, empty, error, and the transitions between them. A generated component has one state. A considered one has eight, and the eight are where perceived quality actually lives.
You should now be able to
- Describe the qualities that read as expensive
- Explain why restraint costs more effort than decoration
- Judge an interface on consistency rather than taste
