Writing up the decisions, not the features

Nobody wants a list of endpoints. They want to know why the data is shaped like that and what you would change.

Concept15 minAI implements

Three decisions, each in a short paragraph: what you chose, what you rejected, and what would have to be true for the rejected option to win. That last clause is what separates an engineer from someone repeating a preference, and it is the thing an interviewer will pick up on.

Include a failure. The index you added after the endpoint got slow, the double-charge you found while testing retries, the CORS afternoon. Concrete failures with a mechanism are far more convincing than a feature list, and they are the part of a write-up that anyone actually reads to the end.

You should now be able to

  • Write a decision record for a real choice you made
  • Describe a failure honestly and what it taught you
