Take the same system and design the version that handles ten times the load, then a hundred, and say what breaks first at each step.

  • A stated bottleneck at ten times and at a hundred times, with the arithmetic
  • Changes proposed only where the arithmetic demands them
  • A consistency and staleness statement for anything newly cached or replicated
  • A cost estimate for each scale, with the dominant line item named
  • One explicit decision to do nothing yet, with the trigger that would change it

Nobody marks this for you. It goes into your phase checkpoint, where a person does.

You should now be able to

  • Identify the first bottleneck at each order of magnitude
  • Propose changes proportionate to the actual constraint
  • Cost each version of the architecture
