Audit something you have already shipped

Measure a real application of your own end to end, fix the largest three problems, and prove the improvement with before-and-after numbers.

Done when

  • Before-and-after numbers for at least three metrics, from the same measurement method
  • A waterfall or trace for each fix, showing what actually changed
  • One improvement that came from architecture rather than configuration
  • A performance budget in CI that would catch a regression of each fix
  • An honest note on anything you measured, tried and failed to improve

Nobody marks this for you. It goes into your phase checkpoint, where a person does.

You should now be able to

  • Measure field and lab performance on a real deployment
  • Fix the three largest problems, in order of size
  • Demonstrate improvement with evidence rather than assertion
